Background

For public institutions, managing technology across multiple schools can present major challenges — from outdated desktop infrastructure to the need for secure, mobile, and easy-to-manage device solutions.

At the City of Arles in France, Ms. Claudine Gilles, IT Technician, manages the primary and dental schools' IT needs. When a national initiative launched to bring tablets into classrooms, she led the effort locally — working to equip 26 elementary schools with iPads and LocknCharge smart charging solutions.

The challenge

Despite the opportunity the initiative presented, modernising classroom technology at scale was not without obstacles.

Before the project, most classrooms relied on outdated desktop PCs housed in static computer labs — equipment that no longer aligned with modern, mobile-first teaching methods focused on collaboration and flexibility.

At that point, budget constraints made full computer lab replacements unrealistic. However, upgrading to tablets offered a flexible and cost-effective way to refresh learning spaces while making technology accessible for all students.

"Not all children have access to tablets or smartphones at home. Using tablets at school gives them another way to learn beyond just pen and paper."

With this transition, the school’s objectives were clear:

  • Introduce a new way of learning that would complement existing interactive whiteboards.
  • Bridge the digital divide, ensuring all students could access digital tools, regardless of their home environment.
  • Replace rigid, outdated equipment with flexible mobile technology to support group work and dynamic teaching styles.

In addition to this, the IT team decided to modernise the network infrastructure, installing manageable Wi-Fi routers to ensure stable connectivity across classrooms.

"We had to improve Wi-Fi coverage in classrooms. It wasn’t insurmountable, but it was essential for the project to work."

The solution

To deploy the iPads efficiently, the City of Arles selected LocknCharge Carrier 15 Charging Stations paired with portable baskets to manage and protect the iPads across its network of schools.

The combination of fixed cabinets and transportable baskets offered exactly the flexibility the City of Arles schools needed. Instead of moving full carts or storage units, teachers could simply carry a lightweight basket of tablets between classrooms — or even between neighboring schools sharing devices.

Space-saving design was another advantage. The compact cabinets could be installed in small offices or secure rooms without disrupting the school layout.

Security was a top priority. The Carrier cabinets, made of steel and secured with padlocks, provided strong protection against theft or damage, with tablets stored safely when not in use.

In addition, the charging system was efficient and reliable. Cables and chargers were secured inside the charging stations, minimising wear and tear while ensuring devices were ready for the next use.

"The cabinets stay in place. Only the baskets with tablets are transported — it’s much more practical and less risky."

Compared to traditional trolleys or mobile carts, LocknCharge’s charging stations with baskets offered a simpler, more practical, and more durable solution — especially important in multi-storey schools where mobility and ease of handling were essential.

Thanks to pre-configured tablets and straightforward cabinet setup, the IT team was able to complete the deployment across 26 schools in just 15 days, without encountering any technical issues.

"Everything was ready as soon as we plugged the tablets into Wi-Fi. We were really pleasantly surprised — no configuration issues at all. It saved us a lot of time."

The results

With LocknCharge Carrier 15 cabinets and baskets, the City of Arles was able to successfully modernise its primary school infrastructure and deliver on its objectives.

In total, 22 schools were equipped with individual sets of tablets, while four additional schools were provided with charging cabinets and shared devices managed flexibly through the use of transport baskets.

Each school, regardless of whether they had a full set of devices or shared access, benefited from fixed, secure charging stations that made daily device management simple and efficient for teachers and staff.

The project also helped bridge the digital divide, giving all students — especially those without access to devices at home — the opportunity to work with modern tools as part of their everyday education.

"Since the installation, not a single school has reported a problem or malfunction. It's been the fastest and smoothest deployment I've ever managed. I wholeheartedly recommend LocknCharge and Econcom to other municipalities. Everything worked as expected, and the support was excellent."

By implementing LocknCharge, the City of Arles didn't just upgrade its equipment — it opened new pathways for its students to engage, collaborate, and build future-ready skills through technology.
